The Shepherd’s Cloak
Thick Mitts
Size: Small Child (Large Child or Small Adult)
Yarn: One skein 4oz 2-ply worsted weight yarn
Needles: Size 10 ½, set dpn or size needed to obtain correct gauge.
Gauge: Measured over stockinette stitch 3 ½ sts = 1 inch
Extras: Small stitch holder
Using yarn double, cast on 22(28)sts. Join and K1, P1 rib for 2(3)inches. Switch to stockinette stitch and K until entire piece measures 3(4) inches.
Thumb Gusset
Round 1: K1st, place marker (m), increase (inc) 1st, K1, inc 1st, place second m. K to end of round (rnd).
Round 2: K
Repeat last 2 rnds until there are 7(9)sts between the markers, ending with rnd 2.
Next rnd: K1, slip 7(9)sts from between markers onto a stitch holder. Make 1st (can be done by making a half hitch with your yarn), K to end of rnd 22(28)sts.
K in the rnd until mitten is within ½ inch of the desired length (make tracing of intended hand, measure distance from thumb/forefinger joining to tip of longest finger).
Top decreases:
Round 1: *K2tog* Repeat from * around.
Round 2: K
Round 3: *K2tog* Repeat from * around.
Pull yarn through remaining sts
Thumb:
K sts from holder, pick up 1st between first and last stitch from hand sts, total 8(10)sts. Join and K in the rnd for 7(9)rnds. Next rnd: *K2 tog* Rep from * around, pull yarn through remaining sts.
Darn in ends. Make second mitten & block both.
